Are you over seeing and hearing folks say how, “blessed,” they are? We are too. Blessed implies favored by a higher power over others because of one’s religious convictions. It comes off as privileged and sanctimonious to many ears, including ours.
As atheists, we understand that luck has a lot to do with it. Warren Buffett talks about, “winning the ovarian lottery,” because he was born white and male in the United States, had a family who cared for him, and educated him. Through this lens, we know we have to expand our good fortune as far and wide as we can. We are always extending a hand of goodwill to our fellow passengers on the big blue ball we call home rather than projecting moral superiority.
Fortunate Not Blessed expresses that we non-believers understand we are not favored over others by a higher power but rather, are extraordinarily lucky to even exist, let alone in this place, and this time, and we are working every day to level the playing field as much as we can.
